With free agency just around the corner how will the Kansas City Chiefs build on their Super Bowl championship roster heading into 2020?
Chiefs Cap Space
Before we get to the list of free agents we need to view the cap space the Chiefs will be working with. According to Spotrac, the Chiefs will have just over $19.2 million, which is the seventh lowest amount. There are several players who carry a big cap hit, that if cut would save the Chiefs quite a bit of money.
Chiefs Impending Free Agents
The Chiefs have quite a few free agents this year. They carry three different designations; unrestricted, exclusive rights, and team option(team can keep the player at a designated salary or decline the option and allow the player to hit free agency).
Unrestricted Free Agents:
- Blake Bell
- Bashaud Breeland
- Morris Claiborne
- Kendall Fuller
- Chad Henne
- Chris Jones (Expected to be given the franchise tag)
- Darron Lee
- Jordan Lucas
- LeSean McCoy
- Matt Moore
- Emmanuel Ogbah
- Mike Pennell
- Reggie Ragland
- Keith Reaser
- Demarcus Robinson
- Anthony Sherman
- Terrell Suggs
- Spencer Ware
- Xavier Williams
- Stefen Wisniewski
Exclusive Rights Free Agents
The top priority for the Chiefs in all of free agency is to sign Chris Jones to a long term deal. Other than Patrick Mahomes, no player is more important to the team than Jones. Jones’ contract could approach nearly $20 million per year, but he is worth every penny. 2019 was not a one time breakout season for him. He has been a star for the team for several seasons now and he deserves to be paid like it.
Due to such little space, the Chiefs should focus on finding guys at a discount. They have enough high level players that they don’t need to make any splashes in free agency. The first priority should be taking care of in house guys. Chris Jones is a must for the team to re-sign. Mike Pennell had a break out year in 2019 and the team should strongly consider retaining him. The team should also try to keep secondary standout out Bashaud Breeland. Breeland was one of the most instrumental pieces to the Super Bowl team.
The linebacking group will take a huge hit in free agency with Reggie Ragland and Darron Lee being UFAs. Damien Wilson is another starting linebacker who has a team option in 2020. If the Chiefs decline his option they would save $3 million in cap space.
It would be nice to be able to sign guys like Cory Littleton, Joe Schobert, and Byron Jones but the Chiefs will quickly be priced out on such star players. These are some more contract-friendly players the team should look at.
The Chiefs could create a lot of space by letting Sammy Watkins go. A restructured deal would be best for both sides, but as of now, Watkins carries a $21 million cap hit towards 2020. If the team moves on from him it would allow them to re-sign some of their own guys or go after a higher target in free agency such as Kyle Van Noy.
