At the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, we have a stacked UFC 248 card headlined by an absolute cracker of a fight. Israel Adesanya makes the first defence of his Middleweight throne when he takes on the dangerous Yoel Romero. In the Co-Main, Weili Zhang also makes her first defence of her Strawweight title. She’ll take on the former Strawweight queen, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
Israel Adesanya vs Yoel Romero
Israel Adesanya has taken the UFC by storm. Adesanya made his UFC debut back in 2018 at UFC 221, where he defeated Rob Wilkinson by TKO in the second round. Since his UFC debut, he is currently 7-0 in the UFC and a very impressive 18-0. He’s still to be handed his first loss in his professional MMA career.
Adesanya’s last fight was against the former Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker, who currently has two wins over Adesanya’s opponent for the night, Yoel Romero. In Adesanya’s last fight, he defeated Whittaker by KO in the second round. Many thought the fight would’ve been his biggest test yet. However, he eased by Whittaker, taking the Middleweight throne in the process.
Whilst Romero is currently on a two-loss streak, Adesanya requested this fight, asking for Romero specifically. This will be Adesanya’s biggest test to date, with Romero being an extremely dangerous opponent with one-punch knockout power.
Whilst a two-fight loss streak normally does not get you a UFC title shot, Yoel Romero managed to put himself back into the title picture when Adesanya requested to fight one of the most dangerous men in the division. Romero’s last two losses have both come via decision against Paulo Costa and the former Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.
Romero finds himself in a very fortunate position. His last win was against Luke Rockhold, where he KO’d Rockhold in the third round in UFC 221, the card the Adesanya made his UFC debut on. Romero has a third chance at UFC gold and is hoping to make it third time lucky against Adesanya.
This fight is shaping up to be an incredible fight, with Adesanya’s awkward style and Romero’s one-punch KO power. Let us hope these men produce a fight we will be talking about for years to come.
Weili Zhang vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Weili Zhang makes her first defence of her newly won UFC Strawweight title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk in what could turn out to be an all-out brawl.
Zhang won her title on UFC Fight Night: 157, where she defeated Jessica Andrade by TKO in a very impressive 42 seconds. Zhang is currently 4-0 in the UFC and 20-1 overall in her MMA career. Her only loss dates back to November 2013, when she lost via decision in her first ever MMA pro fight. Since then, she has gone on a tear, proving that she is not only dangerous on the ground with multiple submission victories, but is also very dangerous on the feet, winning KOs and TKOs also.
This will definitely be Zhang’s toughest test yet, with Joanna wanting to regain her previously held Strawweight title. Zhang will have to be careful on the feet, as Joanna has vicious hands and can knock anyone out if she catches them.
Joanna comes into this fight off a hard-fought decision win against Michelle Waterson and before that lost against Valentina Shevchenko, also via decision. Jedrzejczyk became the Strawweight queen back in March 2015, when she impressively KO’d inaugural Strawweight champion Carla Esparza in the 2nd round. Joanna then went on the defend her title an impressive five times before being TKO’d in the first round against Rose Namajunas in November 2017. Though in her last five fights, she is currently 2-3, she will want to prove that she still has it and will want to regain her Strawweight throne.
Zhang will want to cement her place on the throne whilst Joanna will be wanting to take it back. This will be an incredible fight and we certainly cannot wait to watch it here at Overtime Heroics MMA.
Overall, the main events should be must-watch T.V. Don’t miss it!
