Cubs Announce Additional Roster Cuts

The Cubs announced additional cuts to the spring roster today, reducing the number of players to 44.

Right-handed pitchers Adbert Alzolay and Colin Rea were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Alzolay was initially thought of as a contender for the Cubs’ fifth starting rotation spot, but somehow, I knew that wouldn’t be the case. His minor-league performances have been lackluster, while his major-league performances have been just plain terrible.

Alzolay is not turning out to be what scouts, ownership and fans had hoped for. With any luck, he’ll make the majors one day, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Cubs trade him in the future.

Colin Rea didn’t see much action this spring, but what action he did see was enough to convince David Ross. During 5.2 innings of work, Rea has posted a 12.71 ERA. He’s allowed eight earned runs, a home run, and six hits, while walking four. Rea hadn’t seen MLB action since 2016 prior to joining the Cubs this winter.

Non-Roster Invites

Shortstop Zack Short has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Non-roster invites (2B) Carlos Asuaje, (1B) Corban Joseph, (IF) Trent Giambrone and outfielder Noel Cuevas have all been optioned to minor-league camp.

I have little doubt that you’ll see Giambrone and Short in the future. Short is an incredible fielder and while Giambrone can field well, he also swings a wicked bat.

Catcher, Miguel Amaya was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Amaya’s lack of progression may have played a part in the Cubs’ decision not to shop either Victor Caratini or Willson Contreras this winter. Rumors had swirled about both, but there was no way that the Cubs were about to break up one of the best catching platoons in baseball on a maybe from Amaya.

With the announcement of the additional cuts, the Cubs’ camp, now 44, consists of 26 pitchers, four backstops, six a half-dozen outfielders and eight infielders. There are still 10 non-roster invites among those, with Ian Miller continuing to stand out.
