What We Know
Widely considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time, The Last of Us ‘s highly anticipated sequel is set to deploy later this year. However, in a surprise turn of events, The Hollywood Reporter, alongside Sony themselves, announced Thursday that the video game will be made into a television series by HBO. Creative Director Neil Druckmann is involved with the series and will both work as a writer and executive producer. He’ll be partnered up with Craig Mazin, creator of the HBO series Chernobyl. Druckmann also revealed that the series will follow our game’s heroes, Joel and Ellie and will not be the story of another group or individual.
About the Game
The Last of Us was originally released in 2013 and was eventually remastered for Playstation 4, receiving high praise from all who’ve played. From one of the best video game development companies in the world, Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is an action-adventure survival-horror game with a story and pacing that immerses the player into the universe in a way that not many others have been able to capture. A few that come to mind are BioShock, BioShock Infinite, and God of War (2018).
These developers are able to create a game where they not only pace the gameplay in a way that makes sense to the story and doesn’t throw it off with a random, unwarranted fight but also allows the player to follow a linear path while also having complete freedom to explore. This type of game tells a story not only through the incredible characters and voice actors but also the world the developers build for the player to explore and discover.
What to Expect (MINOR GAME SPOILERS)
It would be wise to first expect what we already have. There is a very good chance that the series will loosely follow the same story and characters as the original game. Quite frankly, that’s exactly what it should do. If there were ever a video game that could be perfectly turned into a movie if done correctly, it’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Just kidding, (it actually wasn’t bad though) it’s The Last of Us. With the perfect timing to launch into part 2 of the series another year or so after the second game releases. We’ll have a young Ellie and a grizzled Joel, fighting zombies, fighting humans, arguing, and (spoilers) forming a father-daughter bond that’ll bring a tear to your eye all over again.
