Anthony Castonzo Is Back!

It wasn’t a guarantee. Anthony Castonzo finished the 2019 season and stated that he needed to think things over. There were only two choices according to Castonzo, retire or resign. BAM! We all flashed back to the pre-season of 2019 when Colts’ nation was rocked by the sudden retirement of our franchise quarterback Andrew Luck. Now here we were, not even a year removed, being told another franchise cornerstone could be calling it quits. Colts’ nation got good news on Sunday morning when Anthony Castonzo officially resigned with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Extension

It was reported Sunday morning that the Colts resigned with the Colts for two years and 33 million dollars. This is big news for a couple of reasons. First, Castonzo has been one of the elite offensive linemen in football over his career. His extension ensures the Colts don’t have to worry about replacing their starting left tackle until at least 2022. This allows the Colts to use their expansive free-agent cap space and draft capital to focus on other holes for the upcoming season.

Second, it keeps the Colts already elite offensive line completely intact. Every starter up front for the Colts is under contract through the 2020 season. Castonzo himself has a PFF rating of 81.3. AC resigning allows for this unit to continue to build cohesiveness and trust amongst all the members of the offensive line. The Colts are an elite offensive line. Especially with Anthony Castonzo.

Finally, it gives Colts fans a break. The loss of Andrew Luck is not equal to the loss of Anthony Castonzo. Yet, there was a sense of “not again” amongst nearly every Colts fan. But, Anthony Castonzo is back and Colts fans everywhere can rejoice! Now, if only we could get Luck to come out of retirement.
