Chad Forbes threw out a couple of names to watch Sunday night at the start of the NFL legal tampering period today. Per Forbes, the Browns will make a run at Nick Kwiatkoski and Jack Conklin early. Kwiatkoski would provide a cheap replacement for Joe Schobert and also gives the Browns a veteran at the linebacker position. Conklin is the best right tackle on the market and is a fit for the zone scheme. Lets breakdown what the Browns are getting in these two free agents should they sign both.
Jack Conklin, RT, Titans
Jack Conklin has been a steady force at right tackle for the Tennessee Titans since drafted number eighth overall in 2016. Over four seasons with the Titans, he has started all 57 games he has played. Conklin did miss seven games in 2018 due to a concussion and a pair of knee injuries. Tennessee decided that they would not risk the fifth-year option and now Conklin is on the open market. The Browns need a right tackle and a 25-year-old former all-pro just might fit the bill.
Nick Kwiatkoski, ILB, Bears
The Browns are letting Joe Schobert walk and cut Christian Kirksey last week. These moves leave a hole at linebacker that the Browns need to fill. Going into next season with two second-year players is not ideal for a team looking to make the playoffs. Enter Nick Kwiatkoski from the Bears. Kwiatkoski has been with the Bears since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 Draft. He has 22 starts over those four years with a career-high of eight last season. In those eight starts, Nick put up 76 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble. His overall grade from Pro Football Focus for last season was 72.4. One concern for Browns’ fans is his 11.6% missed tackle rate according to Pro Football Reference. One of the biggest concerns with Schobert was all the missed tackles, and he was at 10.7% over 16 starts and 133 tackles. The front office is showing that it is all about the money at linebacker. Kwiatkoski is nearly the same player as Schobert but will likely only cost 7-9 million instead of the 10-13 million Schobert wanted.
