According to Ian Rapoport, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have franchised last year’s NFL sack leader Shaquil Barrett. Barrett finished 2019 with a career-high 19.5 sacks for the Bucs, so the tag was not surprising.
While franchising Barrett was always the likely scenario, it takes a big piece off the free agency board. This move will push players such as Shaq Lawson, Vic Beasley, and more up the line for bigger paydays from teams with needs on the edge. The Buccaneers will also have more time to get an extension ironed out or let him play out the year on the tag to prove he is not a one year wonder.
This move also shows the Bucs are more than willing to let Jameis Winston walk in free agency. The Bucs have shown that a potential one year wonder is more important than a player once thought of as the franchise quarterback of the future. Will this put the Bucs in the running for one of the free-agent quarterbacks on the market? Will Tom Brady be at the top of Bruce Arians’ shopping list? This move will definitely add more intrigue to the rest of the free agency period for Bucs fans.
