Anthony Harris was tagged minutes prior to the franchise tag designation deadline. This is only the third time Minnesota has ever used the tag.
Anthony Harris was tied for the league-high in interceptions with six in 2019. Following this breakout season, Minnesota decided to tag him so they can either keep him or trade him. It has become more common in recent years for teams to tag and trade players rather than waiting a year for the compensatory pick.
Harris was supposed to be the top free-agent safety this year so teams will have to negotiate a deal with Minnesota or focus their efforts elsewhere. This will give Harris one year to prove that he can have another good season before they sign him to a long-term deal.
Whether they keep him or not, this was not seen to be likely. The Vikings extended Kirk Cousins earlier in the morning which cleared up some cap space for 2020. Harris is projected to make around $12.1 million under the tag.
