According to a tweet from Ian Rappaport, The Buffalo Bills are signing defensive tackle Vernon Butler from the Carolina Panthers.
Vernon Butler, Defensive tackle
Vernon Butler struggled to find the field in his first three years in the league. However, he had a breakout season in 2019, recording six sacks. This was an explosion, as Butler only has eight career sacks. Due to this, Butler’s deal is an incentive-laden one, with roughly two million in guarantees. The base salary of the contract is 16 million, with around nine million of that guaranteed.
The Buffalo Bills continue to bolster their defensive line, having signed defensive tackles Jordan Phillips and Quinten Jefferson.
Butler should compete right away for a starting spot, as the Bills Lack depth behind Ed Oliver. Butler will have several demons to exercise from his time in Carolina. He was often injured, having missed 12 games over his four-year career. He has also never recorded a full season in the NFL.
Butler has also struggled with consistency, having recorded only half a sack between the 2017-18 seasons. He broke out in 2019, starting in nine games. While Butler still has a long way to go towards establishing himself in the NFL. He will be returning to his original defensive coordinator Sean Mcdermott, now his head coach in Buffalo.
This will benefit him in his hopes to become the player the Panthers hoped he would become when they took him with the 31st pick in the 2016 draft. He has been underwhelming so far. It is time to see if a change of scenery will do him good.
