InterMiamiCF stadium is the new home for Fort Lauderdale soccer. This is the new home of the expansion team Inter Miami CF playing in the MLS. This team is co-owned by David Beckham and is also president.
InterMiamiCF Stadium Was Built on an Old Stadium
In January 2019, InterMiamiCF became the newest expansion team in the MLS. They decided to pursue the old Lockhart Stadium site for training purpose only because they had no site to play at the time. The Fort Lauderdale city council voted to approve a move in March. By April they started demolition of the historic site due to its instability.
The New Project
In July, the commission approved a 50-year lease on the old site which later becomes InterMiamiCF stadium. March 14th, 2020 was opening day but due to the Coronavirus outbreak, it was postponed.
This stadium seats 18,000 fans and is also facing north to south. This is done to help the goalies due to the sun. It took nearly a year to build and it took 60 million dollars to finance. The stadium will also be shared with USL1 team Fort Lauderdale CF until Inter Miami CF’s new home is built in 2022. They will move in 2022 because their new state of the art Miami Freedom Park will be open in Miami.
The area of Fort Lauderdale can’t wait for opening day to come after the pandemic is over. The Fort Lauderdale Strikers left the old Lockhart stadium in 2016 which means these fans are overdue for some soccer excitement. There are talks that the season will have to wait till June but that’s only a prediction. When it comes back these fans will be ready to cheer this team on.
