Clay Matthews signed a 2-year deal with the Rams last year worth $16.75 million. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2009. Matthews spent most of his career there prior to coming to Los Angeles.
A defensive leader, Matthews had 27 solo tackles and eight sacks. He helped a Rams defense that ended up being the 17th best in the league, according to Pro Football Focus. The outside linebacker will likely find a landing spot on another team soon, as he still plays at a high level of football and brings experience in multiple schemes to any defense.
The new season has not been kind to the Rams. The team has lost many key defensive players. Guys like Cory Littleton to the Raiders and Dante Fowler Jr. to the Falcons. They signed Leonard Floyd and A’Shawn Robinson to plug in some holes, but it’s clear the team is making even more decisions to free up cap space.
