Todd Gurley Released by Rams

Star running back Todd Gurley was released in a less than shocking move by the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams made this move during the eleventh hour, as Gurley was due a roster bonus at four P.M. Today according to Adam Schefter:

This is an unexpected but huge move for the Rams. Todd Gurley comes with a huge cap hit over the next two seasons, as he was two years into a 60 million extension.

This does, however, save the Rams roughly four and a half million for the cap this year, which is the big gain for the team. They desperately need the cap being one of the most cash-strapped teams in the league.

This is also a major shake-up in a free agency period that is just settling down. Entering the 25-year-old Gurley into a running back needy league as a free agent could change or enforce the perception of many team’s offseasons, such as the Buccaneers.

Tampa has been a Rumored landing spot for Gurley all offseason. Wherever he goes, questions will come with the former UGA star, as he is a rapidly deteriorating player, but still an all-pro talent when healthy.

The biggest drawback for Gurley is the risk versus reward of his talent versus his health. He will likely demand a top contract for a running back. However, he will likely have to settle for a short term prove-it deal.

If Gurley takes a one year deal and proves that he still has it, he can reset his market and land a monster deal next season in a less stacked running back market.
