Due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, there is not much to talk about in the world of hockey. Every now and then we might hear from a player or two about what they are doing during this time. There have been a few items of news regarding the Maple Leafs recently. In this article I will be looking at all three of these news items.
The Toronto Team Fund
On March 15th, Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan joined other Toronto sports teams in announcing the Team Toronto Fund. Shanahan is joined by Raptors president Masai Ujiri, Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro and Argonauts/ TFC president Bill Manning. This fund will assist all arena/stadium and support staff members for their respective organizations should those individuals need extra financial assistance during this very difficult time. Management, coaches and players from all five teams will contribute to this fund.
Maple Leafs president brendan Shanahan was quoted saying “As we’re dealing with these unprecedented circumstances, we’re seeing this as a time where our communities can band together and take care of one another. So many of our staff provide us love and support every day they come to work, so we see this as an opportunity to reciprocate those same virtues in this time of uncertainty. Our employees are part of the fabric of our team and following the leadership of MLSE’s ownership group along with CEO Michael Friisdahl, who led the launch of the financial assistance program for employees, our players, coaches and management all wanted to pitch in to help ease some of the burden and worry that affects so many at this difficult time.”
Rookie of the Year
Maple Leafs prospect Nick Abruzzese was recently named the ECAC Rookie of the Year. ECAC Hockey is one of the six conferences that compete in NCAA Division I ice hockey. Abruzzese plays for Harvard within the ECAC and this was his first season playing there. He recorded 14 goals and 30 assists for 44 points in 31 games played this season.
Abruzzese is a 2019 4th round pick of the Maple Leafs selected 124th overall. Before being drafted, Abruzzese recorded 29 goals and 51 assists for 80 points in 62 games for the Chicago Steel of the USHL.
A Legend Turns 80
This past Sunday (March 22nd) marked the 80th birthday of Maple Leafs legend Dave Keon. Some consider Keon to be the greatest player to ever wear a Maple Leafs sweater. Keon played 1062 games in Toronto over 15 seasons collecting 365 goals and 493 assists for 858 points along the way. He also had 67 points in 89 playoff games with Toronto.
Final Thoughts on The Maple Leafs News
The Maple Leafs look like they picked a good player with their 2019 4th round pick. Nick Abruzzese put up good enough numbers to win Rookie of the Year in the ECAC. So wonderful to see a legend like Dave keon getting the chance to enjoy his 80th birthday. It is so amazing to see the Toronto sports teams working together to help all their arena/stadium staff.
