Cam Newton Has Some Options In Free Agency

Cam Newton got released by the Carolina Panthers on March 22nd. By this time the quarterback market dried up, which is common with a quarterback heavy draft. The Panthers wanted a trade, but Cam’s contract was too hefty for a team to take on. There are still options although, that Cam will need to think about as a short term bridge quarterback deal.

Cam has options

Los Angeles Chargers

The best fit for Cam Newton for now is the LA Chargers. They were named as a possible trade option last week so they have to make a play for him now. Without a contract, the Chargers can write up a fair, cap friendly deal.

The starter for the LA Chargers is Tyrod Taylor, which would make sense to get Cam signed. Newton will always be a better quarterback, and he also puts fans in the seats. If Newton wants to be a starter this may be his only option, pending on another physical taken by their own doctors.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have reached out to Newton. This is interesting because the Dolphins are set on Tua Tagovailoa in the draft. They have Ryan Fitzpatrick as a bridge quarterback for Tua. They want to cover all their options because the Dolphins do have a lot of needs to fill.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are another team that has contacted Newton. This does not make sense at all. The Broncos are set to have Drew Lock as their future, but Newton could become a bridge quarterback.

Conclusion

One thing that needs to be addressed is Cam’s contract and market value will not represent bridge quarterback money or even a backup. His value will be 18 to 20 million dollars a year. Since this is a new contract he can still get that much but he can dump a lot of guaranteed money to lower the cap hit.

My prediction is the LA Chargers on a three year deal worth 20 million a year with guaranteed money of 35 million. Keep in mind this is Cam Newton starter money.
