What’s Next for the UFC Light Heavyweight Division?

Following the Champion’s recent (repeated) run-in with the Albuquerque Police Department, questions have been raised regarding the future of the Light Heavyweight division. It is important to remember that, at the time of this article, Jon Jones is still the champion. Any changes to this will be updated here.

Possible Scenarios

If you were to assume that Jones will be stripped of this belt, that would leave a vacant title in place. In this case, what would have been a title eliminator between Jan Błachowicz (#4) and recent title contender Dominic Reyes (#1) instead turns into a bout for the title. This seems to be the most likely approach and would correlate with the past experience of this matter.

Alternatively, Jones could face suspension without being stripped of his title. That would, therefore, would lead to the same scenario regarding a bout between Jan and Reyes. Only this time for an Interim Title. This will be the third time since Jones’ title reign began in 2011 that a vacant title has been put in place.

Both Błachowicz and Reyes took to social media to go after Jones following his most recent arrest. Blachowicz said per his Twitter (@JanBlachowicz): “Come on Jon, you have to find more clever way to hide from me than a jail ;).”

Personally, I think that the dust must first settle. Only then can a conscious decision regarding the division’s future can be made. At this moment in time, Jon is the reigning defending Light Heavyweight Champion. Speculation of a bout against Jan Błachowicz was building. A contest between Jon Jones and Jan could still be the going-forward decision. Currently, we have no indication that Jon may be stripped of the belt.

Myself and the team at Overtime Heroics MMA will be updating this story as it continues and following the progress closely. We wish you all health and to remain safe during this time.
