Byron Jones Free Agent Signing Review

Byron Jones became the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL after signing a five year, 82.5 million dollar deal with the Miami Dolphins. This could be one of the scariest cornerback duos in the NFL consisting of Byron Jones and Xavien Howard.

Byron Jones was healthy most of last season, playing in fifteen out of sixteen of the regular-season games. He is only 27 years old, which gives the Dolphins a lot of time to work with the young cornerback. Jones fits into the defense perfectly since the Dolphins played man to man defense 61% of the time last season. He can help the defense cover better than they did last season because he is a tremendous lockdown corner. The Dolphins ranked 26th overall in pass defense last season, and Jones can help put the Dolphins in the top ten. Since Xavien Howard had surgery last season and a battery charge, this could make sure there is always at least one great corner on the field. The Dolphins want two-star corners, so they can shut down most teams in the NFL from focusing on one cornerback.

They are putting 32 million dollars into there two superstar cornerbacks. That is a lot of money to spend on a non-quarterback position in the NFL today. The Dolphins have many other holes to fill on the team, and paying this much to the cornerback position lowers the chances of getting the other positions they need. Jones also only has two interceptions in his career so far, which means he is not much of a playmaking cornerback. He has not had an interception in two seasons now, which is a bit concerning. Hopefully, Howard can stay healthy, so teams do not focus all of there time on defeating one cornerback.

Overall this was an alright free agent signing by the Miami Dolphins. Jones is a lockdown cornerback, but the amount of money he was given reminds me of players such as Josh Norman and Jalen Ramsey, who did not play well as soon as they got paid. He will fit in great with the defense and expect the Dolphins secondary to be one of the top secondaries in the NFL. If the Dolphins can lock down some cheaper options of players on the offense and defense, they will be a scary team going into next season.
