What If The NHL Playoffs Started Today?

Have you ever wondered… what if the NHL playoffs started today? Well, I am here to answer that very question. Today, I will be simulating the NHL Playoffs on EA Sports’ NHL 20

1st Round Match ups

First, let’s take a look at all the matchups in the first round. In the Eastern Conference, we have some good matchups. In the Atlantic, the #1 seed Boston Bruins will face off against the Wildcard 2 Carolina Hurricanes. Next, the #2 seed Tampa Bay Lightning will play the #3 seed Toronto Maple Leafs. In the Metropolitan Division, the #1 seeded Washington Capitals will play the Wildcard 1 seed against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Lastly for the East Coast, the #2 seeded Philadelphia Flyers will take on the #3 seed Pittsburgh Penguins in the Battle of Pennsylvania.

Next, let’s take a look at the Western Conference games. In the Pacific Division, the #1 seed Vegas Golden Knights will play the Wildcard #1 Winnipeg Jets. The #2 seed Edmonton Oilers and the #3 seed Calgary Flames will play in the Battle of Alberta. Next for the Central Division. The #1 seed St. Louis Blues will face off against the #2 wildcard Vancouver Canucks. Lastly, the #2 seed Colorado Avalanche will play the #3 seed Dallas Stars in the 1st round of the NHL Playoffs.

Round 1 Recaps

Here are the final NHL Playoffs Round 1 series record. The Jets beat the Golden Knights 4-1. The Canucks beat the Blues 4-3. In the Battle of Alberta, the Flames beat the Oilers 4-2. The Avalanche absolutely dominated over the Stars and won the series 4-0. The Hurricanes beat the Bruins in 4 games. While the Capitals also swept their opponent the Columbus Blue Jackets. Next is the Battle of Pennsylvania. The Flyers beat the Penguins 4-2 in the series. Lastly, the Lightning beat the Maple Leafs in a 7-game series.

The Capitals sweep the Blue Jackets and celebrate in style.

Round 2 Match-ups

In the West, the Wildcard 1 Winnipeg Jets play the Pacific #3 seed Calgary Flames. Also, the Wildcard 2 Vancouver Canucks play the Central #2 Colorado Avalanche. On the East Coast, the Wildcard 2 Carolina Hurricanes face off against the Atlantic 2 seed Tampa Bay Lightning. Lastly, we have the Battle of the Metro. The #1 Capitals and the #2 Flyers.

Round 2 Results

The Flyers were the 1st team to win their series in Round 2. They beat the Capitals in 5 games. The next team to win their series is the Winnipeg Jets. They beat the Flames in 6 games. The Hurricanes also beat their opponent the Lightning. Now we have game 7 between the Colorado Avalanche and the Vancouver Canucks. After 1 period, the Vancouver Canucks’ J.T. Miller scores a goal and they lead 1-0. In the 2nd, the Avalanche take the lead back with goals from Nathan MacKinnon and J.T. Compher. Vancouver tries to tie the game up but it’s too little, too late. The Avalanche win 4-2.

Round 3 Match-Ups and Results

Now we present the NHL Playoffs Round 3, also known as the Semifinals. In the West, we have the Central #2 Colorado Avalanche going head-to-head against the Wildcard #1 Winnipeg Jets. While over in the Eastern Conference, the Metropolitan #2 Philadelphia Flyers play against the Wildcard #2 Carolina Hurricanes.

Now let’s take a look at the results. Let’s look at game 4 between Colorado and Winnipeg. The Avalanche leads the series 3-0 and if they win this game they are going straight to the Stanley Cup Finals. After 1 period, the Avalanche lead the game 1-0. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare takes the lead up to 2 at the end of the 2nd period. Joonas Donskoi scores at the end of the 3rd and that’s the game. The Avalanche are going to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Next, we head to Philly where the Flyers lead the Canes 3-1 in the series. The Hurricanes are going to push hard for the cup this year. They score 2 in the 1st period. Sean Couturier scores 1 for the Flyers but the Canes push their lead back to 2. The Hurricanes have won the game 4-2. We move on to game 6 in Carolina. The Canes score 2 in the opening period of Game 6. No goals for either side in Period 2. The Flyers score 2 to tie the game back up. Trevor van Riemsdyk says “Give me my lead back” and scores. But no, James van Riemsdyk ties it back up and we go to Overtime. This could be huge for the Flyers. 1:30 into OT Claude Giroux wins the game. The Flyers are going to the Stanley Cup Finals.

NHL Playoff Stanley Cup Finals

Here we go for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. After 1, the game is tied 1-1. The Flyers score 3 goals in the 2nd and take the lead 4-2. But Tyson Jost and Gabriel Landeskog tie the game up. We head into OT for game 1. But the Goalies stay strong and allow no goals in the 1st overtime period. But less than 1 minute into the 2nd overtime, Matt Niskanen wins the game. The Flyers take the series 1-0.

Game 2

We are back for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Oh my goodness, the Flyers score 3 goals to take the lead. The score is 3-1 Flyers at the end of 1. No goals are scored in the 2nd period. Claude Giroux adds a little bit of insult to injury here at the end of the game. The Flyers take the series 2-0 and return home for Games 3 and 4.

Game 3

Welcome back to Game 3 of your Stanley Cup Finals. The Avalanche scored 2 goals in the 1st period. Pavel Francouz maintains his shutout throughout 2 periods of play. The Avalanche tack on 3 more in the 3rd period. They win the game 5-0. The Flyers still lead the series 2-1.

Game 4

Now we go to game 4 action. The Avalanche score 2 early to take the lead. It’s 3-0 at the end of the 2nd period. Jakub Voracek and Claude Giroux score 2 for the Flyers but it won’t be enough as the Avalanche score 2 more and win the game 5-2. They have tied the series up at 2.

Game 5

Here we go. Game 5 action in Colorado. 20 second in and Nathan MacKinnon already scores a goal. The game is tied 2-2 after 1. No goals are permitted in the 2nd though. But on the Powerplay, Samuel Girard wins the game for the Avalanche. They take the series 3-2.

And it comes down to Game 6

Now it’s game 6. Lord Stanley is in the building tonight. The Avalanche are willing to do anything for this cup. They take the lead 2-0 over the Flyers at the end of the first. The Avalanche tack on 2 more in the 2nd. The Flyers put one in late though. THAT DOES IT! THE COLORADO AVALANCHE ARE STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to the Colorado Avalanche for winning the 2020 Stanley Cup Championship Simulation
