Leafs Sign Alexander Barabanov

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have signed 25-year-old Russian free agent Alexander Barabanov out of the KHL. Barabanov signed a one-year Entry-Level Contract. If you’re familiar with the Leafs interest in Barabanov, you might have read this article.

On a conference call last week, Maple Leafs General Manager Kyle Dubas confirmed his club’s desire to sign the free agent. When asked about Barabanov, Dubas said “He’s strong. He’s not tall (at 5-foot-10), but he’s a very strong winger”. He continued, giving a more detailed scouting report; “Tremendous playmaking ability, great skill level in tight. But one of the other things we like most about him is his ability to make plays under pressure and his ability to win pucks, protect pucks when people come after him and use his strength to be able to do that. So, he’s a playmaking winger who also has the ability to finish at the net and we’ll continue to pursue him as best we can”.

In his KHL career that spans a total of seven seasons, Barabanov played in 262 regular season games. He scored 62 goals and adding 75 assists for 137 points. If these don’t catch your eye, you can watch some of his highlights on YouTube here.
