The Arizona Cardinals finished last season with a 5-10-1 record. Kyler Murray won the Offensive Rookie Of The Year, they acquired DeAndre Hopkins, and they have the eighth pick in this upcoming draft. Who will be the Cardinals boom-or-bust in the 2020 NFL Season?
Boom: Byron Murphy, Cornerback
Byron Murphy, the 33rd overall in the 2019 NFL Draft was arguably the best cornerback by many draft analysts. The Arizona Cardinals decided it was necessary to take a CB. Due to Patrick Peterson’s suspension, Murphy had a slow start. He did look better as the season went on. Expect him to have a solid year alongside Peterson heading into his sophomore season.
Boom: Kenyan Drake, Running Back
The Arizona Cardinal’s General Manager Steve Keim offered the Miami Dolphins a conditional 2020 draft pick in return for Kenyan Drake. He had shown lots of shine up to this point but didn’t work well in the Dolphins’ system. Playing his first game as a Cardinal, Drake put up 162 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown making almost an immediate impact. In just the last three games of the season alone, Drake posted over three hundred yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns. As a result, Arizona franchise tagged Drake on an 8.4M tender. Expect him to pick up right where he left off and potentially be a top-five halfback. Of all of the Cardinals boom-or-bust candidates, Drake will boom the most.
Bust: Christian Kirk, Wide Receiver
Heading into his third season, Christian Kirk only has 1,299 yards and six touchdowns in his two year career as an Arizona Cardinal. He has the qualities to be a great slot receiver but that position is already in use by veteran Larry Fitzgerald. This forced Kirk outside to play as more of a deep threat. Kirk struggled to beat single- man coverage well or win contested balls. He struggled last season only putting up 709 yards and three touchdowns. Don’t forgot to mention that the Cardinals also added Deandre Hopkins. As a result, Kirk will have a mediocre season with little production.
Bust: Chase Edmonds, Running Back
Let’s preface this by saying that Chase Edmonds is a great player. He maintained a 5.1 yards-per-carry (YPC) for Arizona and eventually out-snapped David Johnson in Week 7 going off for 150 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns. Unfortunately, Edmonds injured himself in Week 8. After returning from his injury, Edmonds was immediately out-snapped by Drake. You should not expect too much production considering Drake has already shown he can be a three-down running back.
The Arizona Cardinals should definitely improve after two forgettable seasons. They have lots of potential but do still have issues. It should be interesting to see if Hopkins and the 2020 NFL Draft can take this team to the playoffs.
