Why the Chargers Will Have the NFL’s Best Defense

After an extremely disappointing season, and missing out on Tom Brady, many people have given up on the Los Angeles Chargers, perhaps for a good reason. However, with an improved defense, this team is set to have a better season in 2020.

2019 Struggles

Just two years ago, with arguably the same roster, the Chargers finished 12-4 and lost to the eventual champions in the playoffs. Flash forward a year later, and they are the worst team in the AFC West with a record of 5-11. What went wrong for the Bolts?

Phillip Rivers’ bad performances, Melvin Gordon’s holdout, lapses on defense played a big factor. You could point at a bunch of different variables that got in the way of success. Aside from the problems last season, the Chargers are determined to get back to being one of the best teams in the league.

Offseason Moves

The Chargers have had a very productive offseason, mostly focused on improving their defense. They signed one of the top cornerbacks in the league, Chris Harris Jr. to a two-year, 17 million dollar deal. Harris, a four-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champion, gives their secondary a major boost.

Harris joins a group of very talented cornerbacks and safeties, such as Derwin James, Casey Hayward, and Desmond King. Last season, opposing teams could easily carve up the Chargers secondary and hit big passes down the field. Harris helps fix this problem by taking away the opponents’ best wide receiver. This makes it easier for the rest of the secondary to stick to their assignments.

The Chargers also picked up two free agents to improve their pass rush. They signed a solid defensive tackle in Linval Joseph and a veteran linebacker in Nick Vigil. Joseph, a quick but strong defensive tackle will join two studs on the Chargers defensive line in Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. Last Season, Bosa and Ingram combined for 18.5 sacks and 115 tackles, each earning a Pro Bowl selection.

Two other key defensive players for the Bolts are linebacker Denzel Perryman and second-year free safety Nasir Adderly. Both players exceeded expectations for the Chargers last season and should improve even more.

Few good free agents remain, however, the Chargers hold the sixth pick in the upcoming draft. While they should draft a quarterback with that pick, there are a handful of very good defensive prospects they may want to take a look at.

The Los Angeles Chargers will have the best defense in the league in 2020 for two reasons. They have the talent to make it happen, and they are determined to bounce back from a disappointing season.
