Toronto Marlies Re-Sign Scott Pooley

The Toronto Marlies have announced that they have re-signed forward Scott Pooley to a one-year AHL deal.

Pooley was part of the first wave of young Growlers star rookies to join the team during its inaugural season. After a college career where he starred for the College of the Holy Cross, he signed an ATO with the Toronto Marlies. An impressive showing secured his spot alongside rookies Josh Kestner, Brady Ferguson, Giorgio Estephan, Ryan Moore, Matt Bradley, Derian Plouffe, and more, as they went on to win the Kelly Cup.

One of Scott Pooley’s biggest strengths has been his goal-scoring prowess. However, that’s absolutely shined since the start of his professional career. In his rookie season, Pooley led the Newfoundland Growlers in goals with 31 and added 9 more on his way to the Kelly Cup. This season, he took it to the next gear. Pooley didn’t spend much time in Newfoundland, as he scored 16 goals in 17(!) games, good for 7th on the roster… playing 30-40 games less.

With the Marlies, Pooley continued to impress. He became a key producer in what was largely a depth role for Toronto. He scored 8 goals in 30 games, a 20 goal pace during a full 76 game AHL season. He’s the first of that initial Growlers group to find success in the AHL.

What’s Next

Scott Pooley needs to take that next step as he tries to stick in the AHL. He’s already proved that he can produce in the AHL, the Marlies will look for Pooley to take a full-time role. At 26, he’s close to his prime, he needs to prove that he has the potential to succeed in the AHL. If not, he’s still likely to get a depth role on the Marlies, similar to what he had this season, or he’ll absolutely light up the ECHL.

Pooley becomes the first Marlies extension this offseason (midseason? I’m not sure to be honest.), so it’s clear that there was mutual interest to extend as quickly as possible. The Marlies now need to get to work on re-signing… everyone else, as they currently have 6 people signed to AHL deals for next season.
