Group Overview

The Kickers

Justin Tucker is a phenomenal kicker. Extremely accurate and clutch, Tucker has come up very big in his career thus far. In 2019, Tucker once again was very accurate, missing only one field goal all year. Being one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, Tucker has to be upset that he missed two extra points in 2019. This is an area he will look to improve on in 2020.

Sam Koch has been one of the best punters in the NFL for the past decade. However in 2019 he was not used nearly as much as he has been used in the past. His 40 punts in 2019 were 20 less than his previous career low of 60. Sam Koch is a fantastic weapon to have in the punt game, even if the Ravens don’t need him as often these days.

The Snappers

Morgan Cox began his career as an undrafted free agent. He quickly earned the Ravens’ long snapper job in his rookie season and never looked back. Nick Moore is another long snapper that the Ravens brought to the team this offseason. Moore recently played for the XFL, but looks to compete with Cox for the starting role.

The Returner

De’Anthony Thomas was a mid-season addition for the Ravens. He spent his first five games with the Chiefs before being released and signed by the Ravens. Thomas was the Ravens main punt returner for the second half of the season. He also handled the kick return duties once he was signed.

Draft Expectations

2020 NFL Draft image

The Ravens do not need a kicker or a punter heading into this season. However, the Ravens could use an upgrade in their return game.

What To Expect

This is a hard group to project a pick for. The Ravens won’t use a pick on a special teams only player. However, there are plenty of targets that could play a role on offense or defense as well as becoming the team’s returner. Look for the Ravens to try to find an upgrade at returner, but they will not go out of their way to select one. They will likely also bring in undrafted free agents at kicker and punter.

Ravens Special Teams Grade

Overall Grade: A-

The Ravens boast two potential future Hall of Fame players in Sam Koch and Justin Tucker. If their return game was better, they would have gotten an A+. However, with their return game in question, it drops their grade to a very respectable A-. The Ravens have to be very happy with most of their special teams unit heading into the 2020 season.
