Miami Dolphins’ Positional Needs – Post Draft

Safety

The Miami Dolphins currently have Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe at the starting safety positions. They also added Brandon Jones, Clayton Fejedelem, and Kavon Frazier to the roster from free agency and the draft. The Dolphins have a lot of decent depth at safety, but not any outstanding starters. Rowe played 16 games last season, and he racked up 81 tackles, eight passes defended, and one pick-six. McCain only played nine games because he was dealing with injuries. In his nine games, McCain racked up 25 tackles, and three passes defended. Overall, the Dolphins have made some upgrades at safety, but they need to add a star safety to the roster to make this secondary elite.

Center

The Miami Dolphins have Ted Karras as the starting center. The back up currently is Keaton Sutherland. The Dolphins added Karras to the roster from free agency this season. Karras played 15 games last season and only missed one because of injury. It was his first year starting for the Patriots because David Andrews got injured. Karras is most likely just a place holder for the future center of the Dolphins because he only signed a one year, four million dollar deal. The Dolphins made upgrades to every position on the offensive line, but the center position in the draft. Overall, Karras is not a bad starting center, but I expect the Dolphins to draft there future center either next year or the year after. 

Interior Defensive Line

The Miami Dolphins have a few skilled interior defensive lineman such as Christian Wilkins and Davon Godchaux. The Dolphins drafted Wilkins with the 13th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He had a good rookie season with the team, and he proved he belonged on the roster. The Dolphins drafted Godchaux in the fifth round of the 2017 draft, which showed to be a complete steal. The Dolphins also acquired rookie defensive lineman, Raekwon Davis. After the draft, the Dolphins signed an undrafted free agent, Benito Jones. Jones will be able to compete and could be one of the biggest steals of the draft. If Jones proves he can play at a pro-level, then the interior defensive line will not be a problem. Overall, the Dolphins could use one more proven interior defensive lineman or a star defensive lineman who is dominant in the middle of the field.
