The 2020 NFL Draft took place from Thursday, April 23rd – Sunday, April 25th, and for sports fans, it was the closest thing to watching live sports since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. With six total picks in this year’s draft, the Kansas City Chiefs got to work. Chiefs fans waited until the last pick of the first round #32 to find out who the Chiefs would make the newest member of the defending Super Bowl Champions. Many fans thought the Chiefs would address a position on the defensive side during round one, but instead, they drafted a running back. According to Chiefs ESPN Writer Adam Teicher, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach texted quarterback Patrick Mahomes shortly before the draft and asked which player he wanted the Chiefs to select, Mahomes texted back, “Clyde.”

Chiefs 2020 Draft picks:
Round 1 (Pick #32) : Clyde Edwards-Helaire – Running back, LSU
Career College Stats: 38 games, 370 attempts, 2,103 rushing yards, 23 touchdowns, 5.7-yards per carry 69 receptions, 595 receiving yards, one touchdown, 8.6-yard yards per reception
It has been reported that Andy Reid thinks Clyde Edwards-Helaire is better than former Philadelphia Eagles Running back, Brian Westbrook. Clyde is known for being an all-around running back who will bring versatility out of the backfield.
Round 2 (Pick #63) : Willie Gay Jr. Inside Linebacker, Mississippi State
Career College Stats: 28 games, 99 total tackles, 53 assisted tackles, 46 solo tackles, 6 sacks, 11.0 tackles for a loss, 3 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles.
Known for his speed and has been compared to Chiefs all-time tackle leader, Derrick Johnson. Chiefs linebackers coach Matt House breaks down what he has in store for Willie in the video below.
Round 3 (Pick #96) : Lucas Niang – Offensive Tackle, TCU
On 975 pass-block snaps, Niang allowed 0 sacks since 2017. It has been reported Niang will compete for the starting right guard position, according to Chiefs general manager Brett Veach.
Round 4 (Pick #138) : L’Jarius Sneed – Safety / Cornerback, Louisiana Tech
Career College Stats: 42 games, 177 total tackles, 51 assisted tackles, 126 solo tackles, 2.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for a loss, 8 interceptions
L’Jarius Sneed spent his first three years at cornerback before transitioning into the safety position his senior year. Expect Sneed to be versatile and add depth to the secondary.
Round 5 (Pick #177) : Mike Danna – Defensive End, Michigan
Career College Stats: 47 games, 189 total tackles, 77 assisted tackles, 112 solo tackles, 30.5 tackles for a loss, 18.0 sacks, 5 forced fumbles
Mike Danna spent his first three years at Central Michigan before transferring to the University of Michigan. Danna is a versatile lineman who can play inside and on the edge.
Round 7 (pick #237) : Thakarius “BoPete” Keyes – Cornerback, Tulane
Career College Stats: (28 games, 95 total tackles, 19 assisted tackles, 76 solo tackles, 2 interceptions
The Chiefs originally had five total draft picks this year. They chose to trade back into the seventh round with the Titans, giving them a sixth-round pick in 2021. Corner Thakarius Keyes is a lengthy corner who the Chiefs expect to compete and add depth to the secondary.
Draft Grade: A
The Kansas City Chiefs addressed every key position, and now it’s time for the picks to compete with the best. The Chiefs returned 20 of their 22 starters from the Super Bowl Championship team. General manager Brett Veach has done a great job of restructuring contracts since taking over. He has created cap space to make sure the Chiefs can lock up both quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, and defensive lineman, Chris Jones, to long term contracts. The Chiefs will return a deep roster ready for another Superbowl run in 2020.
