As of Today
The Mariners currently have two numbers retired alongside Jackie Robinson’s 42. Never again will a Seattle Mariner wear The Kid’s 24, or Gar’s 11. Thinking back to attending Edgar Martinez’s number retiring ceremony I began to get excited, looking forward to attending whichever players ceremony comes next. While looking forward I realized I likely have two to look forward to as of now. The first of which that came to mind, seemingly won’t even be the first one. Who’s next Seattle?
When I asked myself “who’s number will the Mariners retire next?” my mind immediately responded “The King’s 34”. Thinking of Felix Hernandez first is no surprise. His departure was the most recent, and probably the most emotional many in Seattle will ever get to witness. I never would’ve imagined seeing my cities hero leave his throne for the last time, would feel like such a win. Felix’s send-off last year truly made me feel like we got the win that day. He found a way to give us that, even though the team couldn’t pull out the win on the field. He gave us his career, and everything that came with it, which is deserving of hanging up number 34.
As obvious as it is the Mariners will retire number 34 one day. We still will see another number hanging at T-Mobile park first. That will be number 51. We could talk about his historic career or storybook ending for ages. However, being a future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer who has already hung up his cleats, ultimately means Ichiro‘s number will get retired first.
