Houston Texans 2020 NFL Draft Recap

Second Round, Draft Pick 40: Ross Blacklock, Defensive Tackle, TCU

Ross Blacklock is a great fit for Houston’s 3-4 defensive scheme with his speed and athleticism at tackle. Blacklock ran a 4.9 40-yard dash at the combine. As a pass rusher, he’s dominating with being able to use his quick feet and relentless pursuit of the quarterback. Because of his relentless pursuit, Blacklock’s able to break out of double teams well and change speeds on the fly. Blacklock will need some work on his hands and how he can handle bigger offensive linemen. He should help the Texans defensive line adding much-needed depth.

Third Round, Draft Pick 90: Jonathan Greenard, Outside Linebacker, Florida

While Jonathan Greenard has faced durability issues, he plays through injuries and is a tough player. He’s quick off the outside and can get to the runner. Greenard needs time to develop as a pass rusher, but he’s a perfect fit in the Texans defense. For the immediate future, he will be a solid special teams player. He could become a rotational player this season and for upcoming seasons.

Fourth Round, Pick 126: Charlie Heck, Offensive Tackle, North Carolina

Charlie Heck most likely is brought in to be a backup for Laremy Tunsil. Heck shows good movement when blocking and specializes in pass blocking. He will need to get stronger and be quicker with his feet. While Heck will not be an instant starter, he gives the Texans depth and might be able to step in as a starter in a year or two at right tackle.

Fourth Round, Pick 141: John Reid, Cornerback, Penn State

Bill O’Brien should be a fan of John Reid as he’s a physical corner that makes the receiver’s life miserable. Reid does have a nose for the ball with seven career interceptions and 37 pass deflections in four seasons. Despite having 37 pass deflections, he did tend to drop too many balls. Reid won’t be that effective as a run supporter but will be good in pass coverage for the team. He may not be an NFL starter, but Reid could have a solid career as a nickel corner.

Fifth Round, Pick 171: Isaiah Coulter, Wide Receiver, Rhode Island

Houston’s receivers have been rotating around in the offseason with DeAndre Hopkins moved out, and Randall Cobb and Brandin Cooks joining. Another receiver in the fold would benefit the team, and they found a fun developmental player in Isaiah Coulter. After posting a 1,000-yard season last year, Coulter at 6’2″ runs a 4.45 40 yard dash. His athleticism and speed give Houston a potentially impactful receiver. Route running is inconsistent and struggles in contested coverage. Coulter brings a lot to the table and could be someone O’Brien can develop into a productive receiver for the team.
