The NFL released it’s 2020 schedule, as fans begin to digest the critical matchups for their teams. With the shortage of storylines in the off-season, the media community immediately begins to rank who won and lost the schedule release.
The stats would suggest the Ravens can feel good about their schedule. Baltimore has the easiest strength of schedule in the NFL at .438, and also travel only 6,310 miles during the season. This is the fewest miles any team has had to travel in the past four years. This lack of travel will give them a small edge late in the season. The schedule is favorable for the Ravens, but what are the key matchups this season?
Key Matchup 1: Week Three – Kansas City Chiefs
After opening with the Browns and Texans, week three see’s a potential dress rehearsal for the AFC Championship game. The Superbowl champion Kansas City Chiefs travel to Baltimore for a massive Monday Night Football matchup.
The Ravens and Chiefs are both Superbowl contenders, led by dynamic quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson have different skill-sets, but both are NFL MVP’s before turning 24. Last season saw an entertaining 33-28 win for the Chiefs, but Baltimore has revamped their team, and home advantage should play a factor also. There’s a good chance we’ll see both teams again deep in the play-offs.
Key Matchup 2: Week Ten – New England Patriots
Week ten begins a tough four-game stretch for the Ravens, starting with a tough trip into New England to face the Patriots. Much has been made of the Patriots going through a transitional phase now Tom Brady has departed, but their league-leading defense is largely intact.
Going into Foxborough is always difficult for opposing teams, especially in the middle of November. It will be cold, physical football, something the Patriots excel at. We don’t know what their offense will look like, but the Ravens – Patriots rivalry always produces excellent football games.
Week Eleven – Tennessee Titans
A week after playing the Patriots, the Ravens welcome the Tennessee Titans to Baltimore. This will have added edge for the Ravens after the Titans bullied them in the playoffs last season. That loss affected the Ravens, with the revamp of their defense a direct result of this game.
The Titans were a Cinderella story last season, but can they repeat it this year? Baltimore will feel confident they can get their revenge at home. This will be a crucial point of the season, and the Ravens will need to win this one to lay a ghost to rest from last season.
Week Twelve – Pittsburgh Steelers
Arguably the biggest game of the Ravens season is this week 12 matchup with the Steelers on Thanksgiving night. The rivalry between these two teams is one of the deepest in the NFL, with national attention on Thanksgiving only heightening the hostility.
The Steelers will want to rebound from an injury-ravaged 2019 season and will be eager to knock the Ravens off their perch. Both teams are closely matched, and this will no doubt, be a close game. Will the previous two tough games affect Baltimore in this one? The nation will be watching this matchup.
