The New England Patriots have signed their third drafted linebacker, Cassh Maluia, after Josh Uche and Anfernee Jennings. The Patriots drafted Maluia in the sixth round, and 204th overall pick, in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Maluia’s College Stats
Maluia attended the University of Wyoming and played 43 total games at linebacker in his four years as a Cowboy. He then played in 13 games at linebacker his senior year. Overall, Maluia made a total of 101 solo tackles, 96 assisted tackles, 197 total tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, one and a half sacks, and four interceptions. He was given honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference in 2019.
Overall on the Third Linebacker
Maluia is seen as a player who has good speed, agility, and short-area movement skills. His lateral quickness can be intriguing, but he has trouble taking on blockers and playing with consistent recognition of play development. He plays with fast feet and shows the ability to respond rapidly against the run. Maluia has a good lateral scrape, in which he can stay in front of blockers and attack downhill to cut off angles for running backs. He has a great pursuit speed, considering he ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash at his pro day.
