Players the Rockets Can Add if Rosters are Expanded

The NBA during its Board of Govern’s meeting voted on several scenarios. One is expanding the playoff rosters by two players. The vote was 16 teams said they preferred that the league add two roster spots for the playoffs, while nine voted for one extra spot and five voted for three.

If the league does expand here are three possibilities for the Houston Rockets. Keep in mind this is just suggestions nothing has been reported but anything is a possibility the way this NBA season has gone.

Possible Rockets addition Luc Mbah Moute

The former Rocket last played meaningful minutes during the 2017-18 season when he appeared in the playoffs for the Rockets. Many people may have forgotten but before his late season injury Mbah Moute was one of the most important players on the team. During that season he averaged 7.5 points while shooting .364 from the 3-point line and playing over 25 minutes a game.

Moute was even more valuable on the defensive end where he was able to defend multiple positions and at times outplayed starter Trevor Ariza. The Rockets actually worked out Mbah Moute right before the suspension of the season.

That would make the Rockets’ decision easier considering they would have a good idea if he was able to still contribute.

  • Fits in well with the Rockets current rosters of switchable players
  • Was an above-average 3-point shooter
  • Knows the Rockets current system

  • Hasn’t played since the beginning of last NBA season
  • May not be in basketball shape

Possible Rockets addition Gerald Green

Rockets dealt blow with fear that Gerald Green might miss entire ...

The hometown favorite Gerald Green hasn’t played a game since being injured at the start of this season. Green suffered a broken left foot that had a recovery time of six months back when it was reported in October. With the current season being possibly pushed back all the way to this October there is a chance Green could be ready to play.

This was his thoughts about a possible return this season well before the NBA hiatus.

Green was part of the Robert Covington trade in February when he was sent to Denver Nuggets. Green was later released by the Nuggets and is currently a free agent. Green was shooting .354 from deep before his injury.

  • Knows the Rocket system well
  • An above-average shooter from deep
  • Instant offense off the bench
  • Hometown favorite

  • Liability on defense
  • Coming off a major injury

Possible Rockets addition Kenneth Faried

Yes, there is a theme going on here. Kenneth Faried is another former Rocket who last played in the NBA in 2019 for the Houston Rockets. During his time with the Rockets, his play was up and down. Faried had several great games filling in for an injury-riddled team last year.

But once the playoffs rolled around Faried was nowhere to be found. It was reported that the coaching staff believed he was too much of a liability on defense to get consistent minutes in the playoffs. Faried has not played in the NBA since and was released from his contract with the Zhejiang Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association.

  • Versatile big that plays well in pick and roll
  • Runs the floor which would fit in well with Russel Westbrook
  • Knows the Rockets system

  • Below average 3-point shooter
  • Liability on defense
  • Didn’t end well with Rocket management
