The Pikey With a Dragon-Size Heart – Brett Johns

Welsh MMA is yet another nation with an influx of new talent coming through, especially in the big promotions. However, BJJ black belt Brett Johns is the one Welshman really pushing the pace in the UFC.

Previously ranked in the top-15 after bursting onto the scene, ‘The Pikey’ is looking to crack the rankings yet again and make a run for the title at 135lb.

Cage Warriors and Titan FC

After turning pro in 2012, just one year after starting as an amateur, Johns was fighting in 2 of the larger-known regional promotions and has captured both 135lb titles. Johns had a multitude of ways to finish each fight on the lower-level scene, from armbars, to rear-naked chokes, and also TKO’s. This variety of ways to finish a fight is a perfect mixture for a fan-favourite. That’s something ‘The Pikey’ is growing to become with the UFC fans after capturing the local UK & Europe local scenes.

Signing for the UFC

Brett Johns made his UFC debut in November 2016 against Kwan Ho Kwak at UFC Fight Night 99, winning his debut by Unanimous Decision, the same way he would go on to win his next fight against Albert Morales 8 months later in his second outing in Scotland.

His 2 wins were an impressive way to start but his next opponent in Joe Soto was his biggest test to date. It’s where he would get his most impressive finish of his career, with only the second ever Calf Slicer in UFC history at the time. He show everybody that, even against an experienced grappler, his BJJ holds up.

After the highs of his Calf Slicer submission win, he would lose his next two fights against stellar opposition in Aljamain Sterling and Pedro Munoz. Despite losing, Johns showed a grit and will against Sterling with some great scrambles between them. He truly got his legs beaten up against Munoz, but was still willing to stand and trade, as well as land hard shots back despite losing.

The Welshman’s first 2 losses of his career could have caused a confidence dip, or a longer skid, but ‘The Pikey’ got back up and running with a win over experienced wrestler Tony Gravely, submitting him with a rear-naked choke in the 3rd and final round of the fight. Johns doesn’t have an opponent scheduled next, but will be looking for somebody ranked to continue his ascent back into the rankings.
