Count Ryan Clark as a believer in the 2020 Browns. Here is what Clark had to say on the “Get Up” morning show this past Tuesday:
“When you look at those two teams and the difference in the trajectory of what we feel they’ll be, I believe that the Browns will be a better football team than the New England Patriots this year.” Clark went on to say, “I believe that the Browns young quarterback (Baker Mayfield) will play better than the young quarterback in New England. And when you put all of these things together, that leaves Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots on the outside of the playoff picture and (Browns coach) Kevin Stefanski and the Cleveland Browns in.”ESPN NFL Analyst Ryan Clark
While the Patriots may not have Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski leading the way, they do have Bill Belichick. It is hard to bet against arguably the greatest coach in NFL history. The Patriots also still have more continuity than the Browns have had in the last 20 years and one of the best defenses in the NFL. The fact that Clark pointed out the Patriots as on the outside looking in on the playoffs could be considered a bold statement on its own. To then compound that by saying the Browns are a better team might have people calling Clark a bit crazy.
Is it really that bold of a statement?
The Browns have a talent-laden roster, and the Patriots have been hit hard the last few years in free agency. Cleveland has quarterback Baker Mayfield with two years of NFL starts under his belt. The Patriots have former fourth-rounder with zero NFL starts in Jarrett Stidham. The Patriots have more questions heading into the 2020 season than they have ever had under Belichick. While the Browns have questions of their own, they do have the potential to be special with that roster. Clark may seem crazy now, but if the Browns roster and coaching staff get in sync, Cleveland fans could be enjoying the season they thought they were getting in 2019.
