It has been a very busy week for players of the Toronto Maple Leafs. I look forward to breaking down all the latest news.

Noel Hoefenmayer Awarded

Newly acquired Maple Leafs prospect Noel Hoefenmayer won the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Defenseman of the Year award. Hoefenmayer finished this season with 26 goals and 56 assists for 82 points in 58 games. He was fifth in team scoring for the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Hoefenmayer will be joining the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL) next season.

Maple Leafs Start Practicing

A dozen Maple Leafs players took to the ice recently and began small practice groups. Now that the National Hockey League (NHL) has entered into Phase 2 of getting ready to start the playoffs, players have begun practicing. The other day saw the Maple Leafs players in two small groups. The first group consisted of William Nylander, Zach Hyman, Alexander Kerfoot, Morgan Rielly, Travis Dermott, and Joseph Woll. The second group consisted of John Tavares, Mitch Marner, Ilya Mikheyev, Jake Muzzin, Cody Ceci, and Jack Campbell.

Zach Hyman Nominated

Hyman is the Maple Leafs player nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. For those that didn’t know, it is named after Bill Masterton, the only player in NHL history to die as a direct result of injuries suffered during a game.

During the first round of the 2019 NHL playoffs, Hyman suffered a torn ACL. Due to the recovery time after successful surgery, Hyman missed the first 19 games of the season. Even with the time missed, he was still able to register 21 goals and 16 assists for 37 points in 51 games. Hyman was quoted as saying “I’m definitely happy with my ability to come back from a serious injury.” His ability to bounce back is why he makes a great choice for the Bill Masterton Trophy.

The John Tavares Foundation

Earlier this morning (June 10th) Maple Leafs captain John Tavares announced the John Tavares Foundation. The foundation is focused on creating opportunities and programming for a future filled with possibilities for children and communities. You can check out the website here https://johntavaresfoundation.org/ and if you so wish, you can also make a donation to the foundation.

Final Thoughts on the Latest Maple Leafs News

It sure is good to be talking about new hockey content. Hopefully, there are no setbacks during Phase 2 for the NHL and its players. If everything works out well, we should be talking about playoff games by mid to late July. As teams begin to practice and as we head towards the NHL draft, we should have plenty to talk about.

The Maple Leafs look like they have acquired a good young defenseman in Hoefenmayer. I look forward to watching him develop with the Marlies next season. I am very happy to see Hyman as a nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy. Even if he doesn’t win the trophy, it is just great so see his hard work and dedication to hockey get noticed.

I hope the John Tavares Foundation will succeed beyond expectations. It looks like such a great cause and I really hope people will donate to help them help our future generations.
