Who do the Kansas City Royals Select with the 4th Pick?

The 2020 MLB Draft is finally upon us. It will be aired on ESPN and MLB Network Wednesday night with round 1 starting at 7pm ET and Thursday at 5pm ET with rounds 2 through 5. I did a mock draft about a month ago for the Royals. The Kansas City Royals have a total of 6 picks in this years draft. (Picks 4, 32, 41, 77, 105, and 135.) However, the Royals have a tough choice here being in the 4th spot in this years draft. So the big question is: Who do the Kansas City Royals Select with the 4th Pick? Here are a few options the Royals could go with.

OF Zac Veen, Spruce Creek High School (HS-Florida)

Zac Veen is one to the top high school player in this years draft. He is a five-tool beast who has scouts drooling over his 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame. I had the Royals taking RHP Emerson Hancock in my first mock but it seems Hancock is going to fall into the 5-10 pick range. There have been reported links between the Kansas City Royals and Zac Veen and he seems to be one of their options for the number 4 overall pick. Veen has drawn comparsions to Cody Bellinger, Charlie Blackmon, and Kyle Tucker.

SS Austin Martin, Vanderbilt

Austin Martin is not afraid of the big stage as he played for college baseball powerhouse, the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vanderbilt has made several NCAA Tournament appearances and a College World Series appearance with Martin on the roster. In his 3 years at Vanderbilt under Head Coach Tim Corbin, he batted .368 with 14 home runs and 76 RBI’s. Martin could fall out of the top 3 which some are predicting he might. If he does, don’t be surprised if the Royals grab him with the 4th pick then.

RHP Max Meyer, Minnesota

Max Meyer pitching.

I had Max Meyer going early 2nd round in my early Mock Draft. However, Meyer is now a top-10 pick in many peoples eyes. Meyer has played the role of starting pitcher and closing pitcher and lots of scouts like that about him. His fastball is anywhere from 95-100 MPH and has a very good slider. The Royals could see how far Meyer has skyrocketed into the top 10 and may want to take him before anyone else wants too. It seems Texas A&M P Asa Lacy will go in the top 3 so if the Royals want a pitcher early, it will have to be Meyer or Georgia P Emerson Hancock.

2B Nick Gonzales, New Mexico St.

Nick Gonzales ready to bat.

Nick Gonzales has one of the best bats in this years draft. he led all of Division I with a .432 batting average. Along with that, he had 16 homers and 80 RBIs, and capped his big year by winning the Cape Cod League MVP award while hitting .351 in the wooden bat college summer circuit. In the 2020 season, which was cut short due to the spread of COVID-19, he hit .448 and led the country with 12 homers, 36 RBIs, 67 total bases and 28 runs. Also, he put up those numbers in the 2020 campaign in just 16 games at New Mexico St. Gonzales and Martin seem like the top middle infielders in this years draft and either one could fall into the 4th spot.

Conclusion

These are the players the Royals potentially could take with the 4th pick of the MLB draft. Its a very tough situation due to what the Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, and Miami Marlins do with the first 3 picks. There are questioned surrounding who the Kansas City Royals select with the 4th Pick. Do they take another pitcher in Meyer or Hancock? Do they take another infielder in Martin or Gonzales after taking Bobby Witt Jr. in the 2019 MLB Draft. Or do they take a outfielder that is 18 years of age? These questioned will be answered during the MLB Draft.
