The Lakers are targeting Free-agent guard, JR Smith to fill the void left by Avery Bradley. Bradley decided to sit the rest of the season out due to concerns over his 6-year-old son’s respiratory illness. First reported by ESPN’s, Adrian Wojnarowski.
Smith last suited up to play for the Cavaliers in November of 2018. Just played 11 games that season and he’s been a free agent ever since.
Rob Pelinka and Smith’s agent Rich Paul of Klutch sports were discussing a possible agreement last night and are expected to announce the deal today. Smith worked out with Lakers before they ultimately ended up signing Dion Waiters who are expected to play a major role off the bench for the purple and gold as well.
The only thing people remember about Smith is the blunder in the 2018 Finals. They seldom talk about him is as a 3 and D player. He doesn’t bring the tenacity Bradley brings at the point of attack, but he is in no means a liability.
The Lakers have a dearth of shot creators, Smith can be of some use there as well. In his last full season with the Cavaliers, just 32% of his 2 pt attempts were assisted.
Though the Lakers won’t be expecting him to play 25 minutes a night, Smith is hungry and will be eager to prove he still has something left in the tank.
