Tampa Bay Rays’ Top 100 Prospects on Roster: Vidal Brujan

Half of the Rays’ six Top 100 prospects are middle infielders. The second of the four prospects that were added to the team’s 60-man roster, a second baseman, comes in at number 45 in baseball.

Vidal Brujan is arguably one of the more interesting baseball prospects. He projects as an everyday second baseman thanks to his lead-off mentality and versatility.

The Dominican international signing quickly developed since coming to the United States. He played at a high level in the Dominican Summer League and Grapefruit League. Last season, he split time between High-A and Double-A clubs.

Brujan’s quick ascent can be partially attributed to his quick footwork. His most notable ability is his speed. Brujan put together two straight seasons of 45 or more steals.

Brujan shows his speed on the basepaths by getting on base a lot. As a switch hitter, he has a knack for producing strong contact from both sides of the plate. There is an interesting trend in his swings.

Brujan’s lefty stroke has more power: all 13 of his homers in the minors came from the left side of the plate. On the other hand (see what I did there?), his right-handed swing creates more contact, getting him on base at a higher clip.

Defensively, Brujan doesn’t lack much. His speed makes him an exceptionally rangey middle infielder. He can play either second or shortstop, but his defensive skill set and experience make him out to be a long-term option at second base.

Vidal Brujan will likely play in AAA this season. The organization has a lot of depth at both second base and shortstop, including All-Star Brandon Lowe, who turns just 26 this summer. Although there is a tough road ahead for Brujan, he has the skillset to make it to the bigs.
