Not the news you would want to hear on the 4th of July, but the Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has tested positive for COVID-19. Perez has recently been in Miami before summer camp started this past Friday. Salvy was seen on a Zoom call and was still smiling as always and is feeling fine. He is asymptomatic and he is not with the team.

As we know, Perez missed all of the 2019 season due to season ending Tommy-John. He suffered this injury during Spring Training in 2019 but still traveled with the club throughout the season. The Royals were hopeful to get their gold glove catcher back in 2020. However, things are going to be more complicated from here. Salvy is going to be tested two more times and test negative before he can return to the club.

What Perez Said About Testing Positive

Perez via Zoom had this to say on his positive test for COVID-19.

“I want to tell people to wear your mask, because you never know were you can get it.”

The Kansas City Royals are evaluating players as followed:

In addition to the frequent testing and symptom monitoring at ballparks, Covered Individuals (CI) will be given an oral digital thermometer to take their temperature twice in succession around the same time each day as part of a “Home Screen” that includes answering questions on a mobile app regarding potential exposure to COVID-19. This must be done every day of summer camp and the season, even when the CI is not going to a team facility.

Perez is the first Royals player known to test positive for COVID-19. This comes after several other players around the league have come out and said they have tested positive. This includes players like Delino DeShields Jr of the Cleveland Indians and All-Star first-basemen of the Atlanta Braves Freddie Freeman.

Royals summer camp will continue in Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium. This also comes after MLB put out a statement saying only 31 players had tested positive prior to Friday. Over the next several days, we will see if that numbers increases. In the next few days and weeks, we will find out more about Royals catcher Salvador Perez.
