The NBA is on it’s way back. Leading the East in the return is the Milwaukee Bucks led by none other than the Greek Freak. While they are essentially a shoe-in for the playoffs, success will be different for the Bucks going into the end of this bizarre season. We have put together three keys to success for the Bucks that will take them from contender to threat in the 2020 NBA Playoffs.
The Greek Freak Must Play Freaky
This one is simple. Giannis Antetokounmpo is by far the best thing Milwaukee has had since sliced bread. The Greek Freak is the leader of this team and has to show he’s what champions are made of. He was bestowed the MVP honors last season and stunk it up against Toronto in the Eastern Conference finals. He and the Bucks jumped on top of the Raptors 2-0 before dropping four straight to the eventual champions. Granted, Kawhi Leonard was the primary reason for Giannis’ fall in the playoffs.
If you take out the four losses from the Raptors, Giannis played fantastic. 27.4 points per game, 11.8 rebounds per game, and shot .513 from the field. Looking at the four losses from the Raptors, the team made some adjustments and it worked in their advantage. Production from Giannis dropped to 20.3 points, 12.5 rebounds and .435 from the field. The only reason rebounds went up is because Greek Freak nabbed 23 in game three to the Raptors. The other three games, he only averaged nine.
In order for the Bucks to succeed, first is to have Giannis succeed as well. Being the conductor of this symphony, Greek Freak will have to lead his team with numbers and output.
Milwaukee Bucks Must Reduce the Rust
Second key to success for the Bucks will be to reduce the rust. They have a tough regular season schedule remaining. They have to play the Celtics, Rockets, Nets, Heat, Raptors, Mavericks, and Grizzlies. The only real break they will have is the Wizards and that’s not such a break.
The Bucks have to go out and begin their playoffs now. With almost a four month break, the Bucks will have to knock off some rust, like every other team in the league. The quicker they can get together and knock off the rust, the quicker they can hit their stride and peak in the playoffs.
Reducing the rust will be a big advantage for Milwaukee. The quicker, the better.
The X-Factor: Kyle Korver
Believe it or not, Kyle Korver is the X-Factor for the Bucks. This season, he’s averaging only 6.7 points a game this season for the Milwaukee Bucks. Korver has that dagger that kills teams in clutch times. His threat from the outside provides a different threat as Giannis will likely take it to the rack at will. Having that range shooter can open up a lane for Greek Freak to take by drawing another defender from the path. But if Korver doesn’t take shots, he won’t be of much help.
Korver needs to rely on his veteran status and having been there with Cleveland in 2016. While he won’t carry the team, he can be the difference maker in a game that’s decided by a point or two. His deep threat will be another key to success for the Bucks this playoff season.
