A nightmare is occurring for MLB. One of the most universally beloved players across MLB has decided to opt-out of the 2020 season. While Posey has his reasons, his decision to opt-out is a crushing blow to the MLB season. The Giants and Dodgers are one of only two games to be played on July 23rd. It is clear MLB was expecting Buster Posey to be present when they made that decision. Not only that, but the Giants and Dodgers are televised nationally for three of the first four days of the season. The Giants will have to move into 2020 without their catcher but more importantly their leader. This has to be a bad look for MLB.
Breaking News: Buster Posey Opts Out
Why Posey Is Opting Out
Below is the confirmation of Posey’s opt-out, from Giants beat writer Andrew Baggerly. Buster and his wife, Kristen, have been looking to adopt for years, when this opportunity finally came upon them. Posey had been on the fence previously about the 2020 season, stating he could still opt-out. The fragile nature of his new children is likely the cause behind the ultimate decision. Posey joins a non-insignificant list of players that have decided to opt-out of the 2020 season. So far that list now includes Ryan Zimmerman (WSH), Joe Ross (WSH), Mike Leake (ARI), Ian Desmond (COL), Tyson Ross (FA), Welington Castillo (WSH), David Price (LAD), Felix Hernandez (ATL), Nick Markakis (ATL), and Hector Noesi (PIT).
Buster Posey and his wife are adopting identical twin girls. That is why he has missed time in camp. The twins were born prematurely and stable but will be in NICU for some time. He is opting out of the season.
