UFC Fight Island 1: McCann vs Santos Preview

For the second straight event, there will be UFC action hosted on Fight Island! Molly “Meatball” McCann and Taila Santos will be stepping into the octagon to face off in a women’s flyweight fight. This bout will be taking place at UFC Fight Night: Kattar vs Ige on Wednesday, July 15th. For the second time this year, Dana White and the UFC will be hosting a weekday fight night as the UFC continues to adapt to the effect that COVID-19 has had on sports.

These two fighters have a lot of similarities. Both fighters have resumes littered with finishes. Well, that is until they reached the UFC. Inside the UFC, neither fighter has won by finishing their opponent. In the case of Santos, she will be looking to get her first victory inside the UFC after an impressive Dana White’s Contender Series win in 2018. The similarities continue when you look at the last time either of these women fought. McCann’s last fight was in 2019, which is the same for Santos. However, the difference in those fights is that McCann won hers, whereas Santos did not.

Can McCann add another similarity to the list by defeating Santos and giving her a matching “2” in the loss column?!

McCann’s History

Molly McCann is quickly making a name for herself as a consistent performer inside the octagon. McCann began her UFC career with a loss against Gillian Robertson. Since then, she has won four straight fights, with three coming inside the UFC. With unanimous decision wins over Priscila Cachoeira, Ariane Lipski, and Diana Belbiţă under her belt, McCann is hoping a finish of Santos will catapult her up the women’s flyweight rankings.

Santos’ History

Santos did not have the start to her UFC career that she was hoping to have. After her win on Dana White’s Contender Series, Santos narrowly lost to Mara Romero Borella via split-decision. Santos has not had a fight since that loss despite being scheduled to fight three different opponents since then. Unfortunately, none of those fights occurred as planned due to various reasons. Santos can buy a lot of goodwill with UFC decision-makers if she can put up a dominant performance against McCann.

McCann vs Santos Fight Prediction

This fight has fireworks written all over it. Both fighters are known for throwing down. Additionally, both fighters are hungry. They will want to put on a show for Fight Island to make sure their name is being talked about by everyone. There is no grander stage for an MMA fighter to perform on than the UFC. Which fighter will guarantee themselves another fight inside the octagon with a win?

McCann vs Santos Result: Molly McCann via TKO in round 3.

In my last fight preview, I predicted the correct winner but got the method of victory and finishing round wrong. This time, I expect to go three for three. McCann has the experience and fighting IQ to finish this one. She has been hungry for a finish ever since entering the UFC and I think she gets one here. I see a bloody war going down between these two gladiators, with McCann coming out victorious with a TKO in the third round. That being said, do not sleep on the knockout ability of Santos. She is deadly with her strikes and can end this fight at a moment’s notice. Buckle up everyone, this is going to be a good one!
