Bellator MMA is back with a bang this Friday. I had the pleasure of talking to Heavyweight submission specialist Steve Mowry as he takes on the heavy-hitting Rudy Schaffroth at Bellator 242.
Steve Mowry (7-0) look’s to continue his dominating run since turning professional in 2016. A dominating run that includes a 100% finish rate. Titan FC had the pleasure of entertaining Mowry’s first four bouts which seen the Pittsburgh born get of to a flying start.
Mowry made his official Bellator debut at Bellator 205 while defeating Ben Moa via Americana in the first round. Shortly after building on that with impressive wins over Darion Abbey and Gokhan Saricam.
Rudy Schaffroth (6-1) is eager to bounce back in quick fashion after falling victim to a rear-naked choke from Tyrell Fortune at Bellator 225. The first time Schaffroth has tasted defeat in his professional career. Previous to that the Heavyweight brought a 100% finish rate of his own to the octagon.
How’s life been like for you during the current pandemic. Have you been able to train efficiently in preparation for your upcoming bout?
Mowry – “Yeah I’ve been staying active. It’s been tough with everything getting shut down but the team and I have been keeping each other accountable so I’m 100% ready to impose my game plan on Friday.”
Your upcoming bout v Rudy should have happened at the start of the year. Now use get the chance to fight, when did Bellator approach you about fighting this Friday?
Mowry – “I was approached about three weeks ago. I got news that it was for sure going down but I knew he and I would probably cross paths eventually.”
You’re currently 7-0, with a 100% finishing rate going into this one. 5 submissions and 2 KO’s. Completely dominating everybody. Is it hard to stay driven and motivated when you’re destroying your opponents easily and consistently or are you always as hungry going into the next?
Mowry – “Absolutely not. Every day is a battle for me in the gym with the high calibre training partners I have. So improving my skill set is always something I like to work on plus I just plain enjoy training.”
What are your views on Rudy as an opponent? He’s coming off a loss but previous to that he has a 100% finishing rate also?
Mowry – “Rudy is my toughest test to date no doubt. He’s strong and he fights a very tough fight. His last fight didn’t go his way so I’m ready for the meanest, hungriest, and most dangerous Rudy Schaffroth.”
Looking at Rudy’s skillset, can you pinpoint any strengths and weaknesses in his game?
Mowry – “Rudy has a lot of strengths but I feel like I’m better than him at everything.”
Lastly from me, can I have an official fight prediction? How do you see the bout playing out?
Mowry – “I see me winning in violent fashion.”
