Pirates: Gregory Polanco Placed On Injured List

The Pirates have placed right fielder, Gregory Polanco on the Injured List. This comes almost a week after Polanco tested positive for Covid-19. The outfielder already missed a majority of summer camp, and was absent just days before his test. His being placed on the IL is good news for the Pirates, making him one step closer to returning.

Over the weekend Pirates prospect, Ke’Bryan Hayes also tested positive for the virus. The Bucs can’t seem to catch a break this summer, having two stars go down with the illness. However, as of yesterday, Hayes has been cleared to join the team.

The Bucs don’t believe Polanco will be ready in time for the club’s season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Though he can return to the team in less than 10 days. First, he must pass two Covid-19 tests, which are done 24 hours apart.

Polanco was hoping 2020 would be a comeback season for him. After having years of nagging injuries, this is another speed bump in a season that could have been for Polanco. The Bucs could really use his talents on the field, after dropping the first two games of the exhibition series to the Cleveland Indians.

A Lot to Prove For Polanco

Polanco could make a comeback, sooner rather than later, if all goes well. As of right now, the Pirates have Jose Osuna and Guillermo Heredia taking Polanco’s place. Heredia has been proving his worth in the exhibition games, hitting a homerun in last night’s loss to the Indians.

If Polanco is able to return anytime soon, he’ll have a lot to prove to his team. Joining the Pirates in 2013, and debuting a year later, he was a star in the making. Polanco must prove he was worth it this season. Not only for himself, but for the fans and the organization as well. He has the talent; he just needs to stay healthy. Unfortunately for Polanco, he doesn’t have much time with the 60-game season.
