The Washington Nationals World Series title defense has already reached it’s first major problem. Their superstar left fielder, Juan Soto, will not play against the New York Yankees tonight after testing positive for COVID-19. This is a huge blow for the Nationals and for the MLB as a bright young star is not going to be playing on Opening Day.

While the main concern may be with the Nationals’ superstar, the biggest question we have is with who he’s come into contact with.

Proceed With Extra Caution of COVID-19

The New York Yankees and Washington Nationals need to be extremely careful as we don’t know who else on the Nats has it. Juan Soto did play in scrimmage matchups against the Orioles and Phillies, so there is a lot of concern. Any teammates of Soto’s who has come into contact with him need to be very careful. The same goes with the Yankees, who need to make sure they don’t contract the virus and accidentally shut down this entire season.

How To Hold On Without Juan Soto

The Nationals haven’t announced the replacement for Soto, but whoever it is fills in a huge hole. Not having your best hitter would stink, and it’s gonna hurt to face Gerrit Cole without him. I imagine Michael Taylor will be playing, but he’s not even close to Soto offensively.

They could also try to go with Andrew Stevenson but his sample size last year was so small that it would be hard to trust him. He is a lefty however so there is that small advantage over Taylor. I still think Michael Taylor’s the better option, and I see him playing LF as Robles’ defense in CF cannot be lost.

Welcome to 2020 baseball, where COVID-19 has already sidelined superstar Juan Soto. He isn’t the first and won’t be the last, so brace for any other positive tests.
