Opening Day Was A Success for MLB

MLB may have screwed up the season in our eyes, but the players sure put on a show. The Washington Nationals and New York Yankees opener was up 232% from last year’s Opening Day, which definitely pleased the MLB. It set records and did more than well, as people who just wanted baseball back are clearly excited. The games outside of that opening Thursday Night were still great, as we saw some great pitching and a couple fireworks shows.

Baseball’s back, and it’s better than ever.

Young Stars Shine Bright

Whether it’s youngster Dustin May going 4.1 innings of one-run ball, Chris Paddack with shutout ball, Matt Olson‘s walk-off grand slam, or the White Sox’s young hitters having a great night, young players were on fire last night. MLB has the next generation playing in an exciting sprint where 16 teams will make the postseason.

There was nothing better than watching these young, exciting players make an impact in game one. If you’re team was seen as too young or not ready before the expanded playoffs, I’d be ecstatic about how fun this season’s going to be. Making the playoffs as a dark horse means no expectations or pressure and some fun playoff ball.

Quality Pitching and Fireworks

There were some great games, and a game for every type of baseball fan. Wanted a nail-biting display of pitching? Tune into Kyle Hendricks throwing a complete game shutout. There was also Mike Soroka and Jacob deGrom going toe to toe in a game the Mets stole 1-0. The underrated matchup was Lance Lynn and German Marquez putting on a clinic for pitching in another 1-0 finish in the Rangers advantage.

Want to see fireworks? How about the Twins and White Sox going blow for blow, with Yoan Moncada and Max Kelper hitting bombs. You could also watch the Padres light it up against the Diamondbacks, or the Red Sox clobber the Orioles.

If you love baseball and MLB, you probably loved Opening Day (unless you’re the Orioles, jeez that was an awful performance). The season having 60 games makes it way more meaningful, and I think more people from smaller market teams will be tuning in to try to get one of those 16 spots in October.
