In the first game of the season, the San Diego Padres earned a win at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They won by a score of 7-2, scoring 3 runs in the 6th inning and 4 in the 7th. Now that the top 2 teams from each division advance to the postseason, games against the Diamondbacks hold even more importance as that is who will probably be their biggest competition for that second spot behind the Dodgers.
Chris Paddack started the game on the mound for the Padres where he got the win. The righty had an excellent game going 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and 0 earned runs. He also struck out 4 batters. The remainder of the game was split between Emilio Pagán, Drew Pomeranz, and Javy Guerra. They each pitched just 1 inning and gave up 2 runs between them. The pitching staff had a great first game, hopefully this group can continue on this path for the rest of the season.
The Padres were led by Eric Hosmer who had an outstanding day at the plate. He went 3-4, hit 2 doubles and knocked in 6 of the 7 runs the team scored. Fernando Tatis Jr. went 1-4 in the leadoff spot however he scored 2 runs. Manny Machado, Tommy Pham, Ty France, and Trent Grisham all also recorded their first hits of the season getting 1 each. All around the Padres offense had a pretty solid day especially considering they were facing off against one of the better pitchers in the league Madison Bumgarner.
