New York Yankees Stun the Washington Nationals Late

After a dominant performance by the Nationals third ace, Patrick Corbin, things looked great. The Washington Nationals looked poise to beat the New York Yankees coming into the 7th inning. A questionable decision by Dave Martinez to pull Patrick Corbin after giving up a solo shot to Gleyber Torres, Will Harris came in and gave up the game tying home run to Luke Voit.

This seemed not too bad as the Yankees still were struggling at the plate and the Nationals were coming off of a nine-run game.

Oh how wrong they were.

Washington Nationals Have a Late Game Collapse

The collapse continued as the Nationals’ Sean Doolittle came in and gave up the go-ahead single to Gleyber Torres. The Nats saw their bats fall asleep as they left the bases loaded against Tommy Kahnle and in the 9th the ultimate mistake was made.

A stolen base attempt by Emilio Bonafacio seemed to be a sign of hope, but he goofed. He over-slid the base causing him to be tagged out, despite the fact that he was clearly safe. This killed the rally as there were no outs and he would’ve been at third. The bats then fell silent and they went down easy.

Let’s try to break it down:

Gleyber Day For the New York Yankees

The New York Yankees had bad defense from Gleyber, but the young shortstop hit a big home run and a big single to help the Yankees win. Two of the Yankees’ three runs came from the Yanks’ youngster who was struggling beforehand. If there’s an MVP for this game, it’s probably young Gleyber Torres.

The New York got clutch against the Nationals and stole the rubber match. Is this time to panic if you’re a Nationals’ fan? No, they played a tough, last game to a really good team. This was a great series that went back and forth, and these two could matchup in a much bigger stage in October.
