Just after local superstar, Jack Tannehill, de-committed from Ole Miss’ 2021 class, a more than suitable replacement committed. Special teams coach Blake Gideon lured yet another five-star kicker to Oxford. Late last night, Caden Costa announced his commitment to the University of Mississippi.
While the earlier loss of Jack Tannehill hurt, Costa is no consolation prize. For some, myself included, Costa is more than that. He’s an upgrade from Tannehill.
Following his junior year of high school, Costa ranked as the seventh-best kicker in the country by Chris Sailer. The two-way special teams player is also ranked as the 54th best punter. His versatility is backed up by his raw leg talent.
Simply put, Costa has a cannon of a leg. As a junior, his kickoffs routinely cleared the back of the endzone. In a slew of Twitter videos, Costa showed off his power and accuracy by nailing a trio of 60 yarders.
He also shows off his kickoff power in other on-field clips:
As shown by the videos, Costa has great technique in his kicking. He powers the ball downfield with a smooth and easy release from his foot. He isn’t the only highly-touted kicker joining the Rebs in the next two years.
Costa will have some competition when he comes to campus. In April, coach Gideon secured a commitment from Land Gebhart. The fellow five-star kicker joined Ole Miss’ 2021 class from Jackson Academy.
The possible duo of Gebhart and Costa brings new stability to the special teams’ room in Oxford. They both have a ton of raw leg talent that can be molded into a deadly kicking partnership.
