There has been some good news and some bad news within the Maple Leafs organization. I will break it all down for you here.
Maple Leafs Enter Their Bubble
As the NHL enters the home stretch leading up to the NHL playoffs in less than a week, teams have begun moving in to their respected bubbles. The Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto will be the Maple Leafs home during the playoffs. The hotel has been completely blocked off to the public and will be home to players from seven NHL teams. Joining the Maple Leafs at the Royal York will be their play in round opponent, the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes will also be staying at the Royal York.
A Killer New Website For #93
Former Maple Leafs captain and Hockey Hall of Famer Doug Gilmour announced that he’ll have a new website www.DougGilmour.com. The site will launch on Wednesday, July 29th at 9:30am EST. As part of the site launch, there is a contest going on right now. The contest closes at 1pm EST on Tuesday, July 28th. Contestants could have their quote, paragraph or insight put up on the website. Those who have their content chosen, will also receive a 10 minute Zoom call from Doug Gilmour himself.
Maple Leafs Organization Loses A Legend
On Saturday night Maple Leafs legend Eddie Shack lost his battle with throat cancer, he was 83. Shack was larger than life and known by many as “The Entertainer”. The legend even had is own theme song “Clear the track, here comes Shack”. Shack won four Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs in the 1960’s during his 17 year career. He recorded 239 goals and 226 assists for 465 points in 1047 games. Former Maple Leafs teammate Dick Duff was quoted as saying “We’ll all miss him, he was a big, strong bugger. You didn’t know what he was going to do on the ice, and I don’t think he knew, either”. Rest in Peace Eddie “The Entertainer” Shack.
Egor Korshkov Headed to the KHL
It sounds like Maple Leafs prospect Egor Korshkov is set to sign a contract with HC Lokomotive in the KHL. This is not a big surprise as there are many forwards ahead of him in development. The 24 year old never really lived up to the hype that surrounded him. For a player who was drafted 31st overall in the 2016 draft, he has been decent at best. This season with the Toronto Marlies, Korshkov had 16 goals and 9 assists for 25 points in 44 games. Korshkov played in just one NHL game this season. It was his NHL debut and he even scored his first NHL goal as well.
Final Thoughts On Maple Leafs News
It is exciting to see the players entering into their respected bubbles. This means we are getting closer to some real hockey starting soon. I can’t wait for the NHL playoffs to start this coming weekend (August 1st & 2nd). I am also very excited to see what Doug Gilmour has in store for us with his new website. Although the news of Eddie Shack’s passing is sad, it is good to know he will not be suffering anymore. I would also like to wish Egor Korshkov all the best in the KHL next season and for the rest of his future hockey career.
