As first reported by MMA Junkie, a middleweight bout between Maki Pitolo and Darren Stewart is in the works for UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Oleinik on August 8th. Let’s take a brief look at both fighters.
Maki Pitolo (13-5) is one of the many impressive fighters emerging from Dana White’s Contender Series lately. Maki made a successful appearance on the show by earning a UFC contract with his devastating KO victory over Justin Sumter (7-3). Pitolo looked very impressive during the fight with his fast movements and heavy leg kicks. However, it was the finish that caught the eye of Dana White. Sumter initiated a clinch on Maki early on in the round and Maki decided to throw some powerful left hooks to the body with crazy speed. Those shots left Sumter with no option but to collapse to the ground in agony.
Since DWCS, Maki has a (1-1) record in the UFC. In his UFC debut, he was fighting in front of a UFC record attendance of over 57,000 fans, where he fell short to Callan Potter (18-9). In his second match, in front of zero fans at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Maki defeated Charles Byrd (10-7). Maki will be hoping to extend his current win streak to 2 with a win over Stewart by implementing his fast-paced style to secure another win by finishing his opponent.
On the other side of the octagon will be British fan favorite, Darren Stewart. Stewart will be hoping to find his way back into the win column and climb his way up the rankings with a win over Pitolo. Stewart’s last fight was in March, however, it was with Cage Warriors and not the UFC. In this fight, Stewart suffered a unanimous decision loss to Bartosz Fabinski (15-3).
“The Dentist” joined the UFC in 2016 and since then has obtained a record of 4-5-1. Like Pitolo, Stewart also has a win over Charles Byrd. These two also share the same high tempo style, which should leave fans licking their lips for this matchup.
