After Yoenis Cespedes was reported missing earlier today, it seems as if the New York Mets will be without Cespedes for the whole season. According to New York Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen, Yoenis Cespedes will opt-out of the 2020 season. This means the Mets will be without their DH and will need to replace his bat. On the year, so far Cespedes had struggled with a 76 wRC+ and a .235 OBP through his first 8 games. The question for the Mets is, if Yoenis Cespedes opts-out who will follow suit for them?
What This Means For the Mets and Yoenis Cespedes
The New York Mets most likely will give guys like Dom Smith and Jake Marisnick more innings. They had planned to have Cespedes at least for the start of the season as an experiment but that didn’t pan out. His departure also matters because he is a free agent after this season and will probably tank his value. I don’t see a reunion with the Mets unless he signs for extremely cheap.
Yoenis Cespedes now adds himself to a growing list of players who will not play. They all see the MLB as too dangerous right now as COVID-19 is a scary thing. This is unfortunate for the Mets but as Yoenis Cespedes opts-out, he lowers the risk of being infected.
