Deatrick Nichols signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, he will compete for a cornerback/special teams spot on the roster.
Deatrick Nichols Highschool Career
Nichols went to high school in Miami Central Highschool in West Little River Florida. He was both a football and a track and field star athlete. In high school football, Deatrick Nichols had 105 tackles, 12 interceptions, and two forced fumbles in his four years playing high school football. He won the state championship in his freshman, junior, and senior season. Nichols was known as a three-star athlete, then he committed to the University of South Florida, also his former high school coach Telly Lockette was on the coaching staff.
Deatrick Nichols Collegiate Career
Nichols played four seasons for the South Florida Bulls, which he was a starting defensive back for his last three seasons. In his sophomore season, he was named first-team All-American Athletic Conference after he recorded 62 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery along with four interceptions. As a junior, he led the team with four interceptions and seven pass breakups. In his junior season, he was named second-team All-AAC. As a senior in college Nichols was named first-team All-AAC, which he recorded 56 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and 3 interceptions. Overall, Nichols had a successful collegiate career and he was elected to the 2018 NFL Draft.
Nichols went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft but signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent. On September 16, 2018, Nichols made his NFL debut where he played on special teams. He was waived on October 8, 2018, but he was re-signed onto the practice squad. Nichols was re-signed to the active roster on October 18, 2018, but was waived two days later and resigned back on the practice squad. He was then promoted back onto the active roster on December 18, 2018. Nichols was then waived by the Cardinals on December 28, 2018. In his rookie season, Nichols played two games and had one tackle on special teams. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Cardinals on December 31, 2019. Nichols was then waived by the Cardinals for the last and final time on August 31, 2019.
Nichols was selected by the Houston Roughnecks in the 39th round of the 2020 XFL Draft. In his one season with the Roughnecks he had 24 tackles, with a sack, six passes defended, and three interceptions, which he was leading the league. He was then placed on the reserve/other lists on March 23, after signing with the New Orleans Saints. His contract was terminated when the league suspended operations.
New Orleans Saints
Nichols was signed by the Saints on March 24, 2020. He was then waived on August 2nd, 2020. Overall, Nichols should be able to compete for a cornerback/special teams spot on the roster, since he was clearly a proven athlete in the XFL.
